Vendfun - World’s First Multifunctional Hybrid Self-service Kiosk
Many people say that MCO is not a good time, However, I’ve created the world’s first Hybrid Kiosk that combines check-in/out and vending service during this time.
About Me
I am Benny Wee. I have been in the electronics industry for 17 years. I stayed in England for 2 years before moving to Taiwan to continue to chase my passion in the electronics industry. During my 11 years in Taiwan, I had served a few electronics giants including Microsoft, Intel, Nokia, XiaoMi, HuaWei, ASUS, ACER, HTC etc. My areas of expertise include ecosystem-enabling, innovative thinking, operation and installation, and especially the touch screen technology is something I have been working closely on to refine and optimize.
After so many years of working abroad, I thought, it’s time for me to return to Malaysia for good. During the first few years after returning to Malaysia, I often communicated with the American businessmen and traveled to China. While I was travelling back forth from China, I saw how advanced their automation technology is. Therefore, the idea had taken root in my mind - to deploy an automation system in Malaysia, bringing better convenience to the people.
I had obtained a franchise to run a smart convenience store and vending machine business. In March 2020, Malaysia had implemented the first Movement Control Order (MCO), this is the time when I had decided to transform and optimize our business model.
Past experience made me who I am today
I usually took the night flight when I frequented China for work. It was usually midnight when I arrived at the hotel. I was hungry, but the restaurants were already closed and the room service had ended. Sometimes, I got exhausted and didn’t feel like talking, but I can’t ignore the friendly receptionists who kept asking me questions.
During the pandemic, I put together these pieces of memories and tried to solve these problems that everyone has experienced using my expertise. Therefore, a Hybrid Kiosk was born.

My project
Vendfun is the world’s first hybrid kiosk that combines both check-in/out and vending services. It is also a pioneer in contactless service in this post-pandemic era that provides a safer, time-efficient and convenient automated service.
Solving Hoteliers’ Problems, Unique Multifunctional Kiosk Patent
The pandemic has accelerated the development of the hotel industry, achieving an unprecedented acceleration in improvement and progression which otherwise would have taken 10 years. Especially the contactless service and automation technology. Self-service kiosks are not just a trend, but a necessity today.
The first product of Vendfun is Hybrid Kiosk- a multifunctional hybrid self-service kiosk, suitable for both budget and boutique hotels as well as homestays. It can process check-in/out, sell food and merchandise. We are implementing cashless payment where consumers can make payments using their e-wallet (credit card, Touch’n Go, WeChat Pay, Alipay, Grab Pay, Boost, etc).
Service quality and ethics are the issues that hoteliers often encounter. Oftentimes, the language barrier can also cause a negative impact on the hotel image and reputation. Self-service kiosks can solve human resources problems in a timely manner, and also cut out unnecessary trouble. Although self-service kiosks are no longer a trend, most hoteliers still can’t afford them due to their high cost. Plus, it doesn’t generate any profits.
Hybrid Kiosk designed by Vendfun can solve all these problems: Not only it provides check-in/out services but also sells merchandise, and brings in revenue. The upfront cost borne by the owners will be converted into a rental fee, cutting down a chunk of their expenses.
When I first thought about the idea, I consulted more than 100 hoteliers. They all agreed and supported my idea. Also, this is exactly what the current market lacks.
Later on, I requested assistance from a lawyer for patent registration, then only to find out that I was the first in the world. This means I have gained a competitive advantage by being the pioneer in the industry. The registration is currently in a patent-pending stage.
To Build a Complete Service Ecosystem
On 15th Jan 2021, the world’s first Vendfun Hybrid Kiosk was officially launched at Fenix Inn Hotel, Malacca.

To achieve a true evolution, we continue to unlock new functions, this includes AI cameras which have a facial recognition function. If the AI camera detects a family during the check-in process, it will provide welcome drinks, and if it detects a child, it will dispense a small gift for them. Not only this will surprise the guests, but also will make them feel like home.

Furthermore, customers can register themselves to become a member after they have checked in to the hotel for point redemption, rewards and discounts. At the same time, the system will also provide guidance such as recommending nearby attractions, food streets, and even help you to create travel itineraries. We will also work with different tourism industries to offer more vouchers so that consumers can experience our one-stop service.
Other than Hybrid Kiosk, we will also be launching a Mini Hybrid Kiosk, and a Smart Locker to store keys and key cards that are specially designed for homestays.
As of June 2021, we have already signed a two-year contract with several hotels, and the contract revenue for 2 years is RM380,160.00. We expect our annual revenue to hit up to RM 923,930.00 in 2022. Among the 7 hotels that have signed a cooperation agreement with us, there is one in Malacca, one in Johor, and another 5 from Selangor (Dengkil, Puchong, Sunway, Serdang and Sepang).
There are 3 hotels in Malacca, Dengkil and Sunway that have already installed the kiosk. The remaining 4 kiosks will be installed in different locations. The total revenue is expected to reach RM 80 million in 5 years, and the revenue will come from purchasing kiosks, rental and advertisement.
Contactless Automation is the New Trend
In the post-pandemic era, people started to realize the importance of contactless. Automation and digitalization are one of the strongest driving forces in the development of global enterprise. Automation is one of the important keys to create a sustainable enterprise. Industry 4.0 promoted by the Malaysian government is committed to helping small and medium-sized enterprises in digital transformation and automation progress.
In 2009, Tillster had released a Self-Service Kiosk Index, showing that 65% of consumers are more willing to buy food using the kiosks, a 40% increase compared to the previous year. Tillster also predicted that in 2024, self-service kiosks will be bringing $30.8 billion in revenue to the business.
In recent years, not only McDonald's is operating self-service kiosks, but also KFC had planned to use them in their 5,000 stores worldwide in 2020. While in other countries, Burger King, Subway, Dunkin’ Donutes have already started using the kiosks.
Marriott International, Inc. has started using self-service kiosks, allowing the customers to check in and out, and getting the room keys through the kiosk, making it a true contactless experience. Some of their hotels have also introduced kiosks where guests can buy food, snacks, and beverages.
Hybrid Kiosk from Vendfun combines these two functions.

To Become the Leader in the Offline Smart Device Ecosystem in Southeast Asia
The goal of Vendfun is to become the leader of the O2O offline smart device ecosystem in the interest of meeting the demands of the digital age. We have combined the multifunctionality from both software and hardware into one, serving people in a safer and faster way. We aim to become a partner with other Online Travel Agencies (OTA) such as Booking.com, Agoda, Expedia, Ctrip, etc to improve the services of both local hotels and short-term rental businesses.
The offline service is still something that lacks in the Malaysian market. When the pandemic hit, people flocked to online businesses, like e-commerce, live streaming, etc. In spite of that, I decided to focus on developing offline services. I am not against the trends, but I believe I am actually riding the new wave to start a new business opportunity in improving the services in the hospitality industry.
The offline service is very challenging in terms of human resources and knowledge. We need to have enough resources in order to function. However, I have devoted myself to this industry for many years, and I have accumulated rich experience and have mastered various aspects of human resources, knowledge in technology, and familiarity with every production line. Of course, I also get my support from my professional partners, Rachel and PY.
Rachel, the co-founder of Vendfun, was a team leader in a factory in England. She has had many years of experience in managing smart convenience stores as well as in the F&B industry. PY, our Chief Operating Officer, also the secretary of the Malaysia Business & Budget Hotel Association, has 7 years of experience in managing her own hotels and also managing 12 different hotels in Malaysia.
The reason why we choose to start a crowdfunding campaign on Mystartr is that we are hoping to find people of the same mind. Especially during this pandemic, we need to work together to reduce human contact and revitalize the tourism and hotel industry. Our crowdfunding goal is Five Hundred Thousand Ringgit Malaysia (RM500,000.00). 40% of the funding will be spent on purchasing machine components, 20% on marketing expenses, 20% on labour expenses and 20% on research and development, and operation expenses.
Warren Buffet once said: ‘Be fearful when others are greedy and greedy when others are fearful. I decided to stay positive and choose to sow seeds during this pandemic era. People will soon realize this opportunity as soon as the economy starts to recover, and I am already harvesting.

很多人都说MCO不是一个好时机,可是我却在这段时间,创造了全球第一台结合入住退房功能和贩卖功能的自助服务机。
我的自述
我是Benny Wee,从事电子行业已有17年的经验。先前在英国待了2年,后转换到台湾继续投身我所热爱的电子行业。在台湾的11年以来,我服务过几家电子业巨头,包括Microsoft、Intel、Nokia、小米、华为、ASUS、ACER和HTC等等。我擅长的范畴包括新科技创意发想与研究、实际安装与操作,尤其是触屏科技,都是我一直致力深化并优化的领域。
在外打拼了十几年,我想,是时候回到马来西亚落地生根了。刚返国的前几年,我一直都是和美商对接,也因为工作需要常常飞往中国。在中国往来时,看见他们自动化发展蓬勃,于是我脑海里种下了一颗种子:要把自动化更全面落实在马来西亚,提供国人更多方便。
我曾取得特许经营权经营无人商店,做自动贩卖机。2020年3月,我国开始实施行动管制令(MCO),我决定转型和优化我们的商业模式。
过往经历成就了如今
往来中国工作的这些年,我很多时候都是搭夜班机,抵达酒店时往往已经半夜,肚子饿了周边食肆却关了,酒店的送餐服务(room service)又结束了。有时候太累了无力多说话,但柜台人员基于礼貌却又一直询问你的需求。
疫情期间,我把这些零碎的画面拼凑起来,想着怎么解决这些大家都有共鸣的问题,同时又能结合自己的专业。于是,Hybird Kiosk(多功能混合型自助服务机)这样一个概念的机器就此诞生。

解决酒店业者问题,独家多功能混合型自助机专利
重创全球的疫情加速了酒店业的发展,让原先需要十年时间改善进步的酒店行业,在短短的几个月里就达到了前所未有的大跃进,尤其是无接触和自动化服务这块科技领域。自助服务机不再是未来趋势,而是现代必需品。
Vendfun生产的第一台产品是多功能混合型自助服务机(Hybrid Kiosk),适用于所有经济型酒店(budget hotel)、精品酒店(boutique hotel)和短租公寓。这台自助服务机的功能包括自动办理入住与退房手续,同时贩售各种餐饮与商品。我们采用的是无现金付费方式,即消费者可以电子钱包(信用卡、Touch ’n Go、微信支付、支付宝、Grab Pay、Boost等等)方式付费。
酒店业者常常面临员工素质与操守的问题,有时也因语言不通的窘境,让酒店形象大打折扣。自助服务机既能及时解决人力资源问题,却也省却不少麻烦。虽然自助服务机已经不是一个新趋势,但酒店业者却常常无力负担,一是因为价钱昂贵,二则因为这台机器不会带来收入。
Vendfun设计的Hybrid Kiosk就能帮助解决一切问题:既能自动办理入住退房手续,同时又贩售各种商品,增加酒店收入。而业者需要承担的预付费用也将直接转换成租赁费用,减轻了一笔大开销。
一开始有这个念头时,我询问了100多家酒店业者,他们都一致认可这个想法,而且这的确也是目前市场的缺口。
后来我寻求律师协助申请专利,才发现原来我是全球第一个,这表示我已经占尽先机。目前处于专利待决(patent pending)的阶段。
打造一个完整的服务生态系统
2021年1月15日,全球第一台Vendfun Hybrid Kiosk正式架设在马六甲Fenix Inn Hotel。
“一个真正的革新” ,这是Fenix Inn给予我们的回馈。
“90秒完成入住手续,5秒退房。” Sunway Metro酒店赞叹。
“当顾客登入酒店时,Hybrid Kiosk会直接送他们免费饮料,太惊喜了!” Dengkil Sky View酒店如是说。
要做到真正的革新,当然需要不断解锁新功能,其中包括AI Camera的人脸识别功能。AI镜头如果侦测到一个家庭在机器前登入酒店,将会为他们送上迎宾饮料;如果此时刚好有小孩,机器也会为小孩送上小玩偶。这不仅给消费者满满的惊喜,也让他们有宾至如归的感觉。

除此之外,当消费者透过Hybrid Kiosk登入酒店以后,他们可以注册成为会员,以消费换取积分,累积更多优惠与折扣。同时,系统也会提供不同的导览,推荐你邻近的旅游景点、美食区,甚至帮你规划行程。我们也会和不同的旅游业者合作,提供更多优惠券,让消费者们体验一站式服务。
除了目前已经推出市场的Hybrid Kiosk,即将登场的也还有迷你版的Mini Hybrid Kiosk,以及特别为民宿或短租公寓业者所设计,用来存放钥匙和房卡的智能钥匙卡柜(Smart Locker)。
截止2021年6月,我们已经跟几家酒店签了两年合约。两年的合约金营收为RM380,160.00,我们期望2022年的营收可以达到RM923,930.00。其中7家已经与我们签订合作协议的酒店包括1家来自马六甲、1家来自柔佛,以及5家来自雪兰莪位于龙溪(Dengkil)、蒲种(Puchong)、双威(Sunway)、沙登(Serdang)和雪邦(Sepang)的酒店。
已经安装自助服务机的酒店目前共有3家,分别是在马六甲、龙溪和双威,接下来也会为其余的4部安装在不同地点。放眼5年内,Vendfun的总收入预计可达马币8千万,而这些收入都是源自于商家采购机器、租赁费用以及广告收入。
无接触自动化是当下趋势
在这个后疫情时代,人们都看见了无接触(contactless)的重要性。自动化和数字化俨然成为全球企业发展最强的推动力之一。企业之所以能永续经营,自动化是关键之一。马来西亚政府推行的工业4.0,也在致力帮助中小企业迈向自动化与数字化转型。
2019年Tillster发布的Self-Service Kisok Index指出,共有65%的消费者更愿意使用Kiosk来购买食物,相较起前一年的25%,一共跃升了40%。Tillster也预测,在2024年,自助服务机将会为企业带来超过300亿美元($30.8 bil)的营收。
这几年,麦当劳开始在全球分店使用自助服务机,KFC也在2020年大举加入自动化行列,在全球5,000家店面增设自助服务机。早在国外,Burger King、Subway、Dunkin’ Donutes各速食餐饮巨头早已开始采用自助服务。
万豪酒店集团(Marriott International, Inc.)旗下的多家酒店也在今年开始使用自助服务机,让消费者可以透过机器自行办理入住或退房,并索取房卡,完全不需要接触任何人。有的万豪酒店还设有贩卖机,贩售简餐、零食和饮料。
而Vendfun的Hybrid Kiosk,正好结合了这两大功能。

成为东南亚线下智能设备生态圈领先者

线下服务考验的是人力资源和知识储备,所花费的人力物力都需要有足够的资源。但我多年投身这个领域,已经累积丰富的经验,并且掌握各方面的人力资源与科技知识,对每一条生产线都了如指掌。当然这背后也有赖于我的专业伙伴们,Rachael和PY。
Rachael是Vendfun的联合创办人,曾在英国担任工厂生产控制员团长,并拥有无人商店与餐饮商店管理经验。PY则是我们的营运总监,她是马来西亚商务酒店协会(Malaysia Business & Budget Hotel Association)雪兰莪分会秘书,拥有7年自营酒店经验,同时掌管国内12家酒店。
选择在Mystartr平台众筹,是希望可以找到有共同理念的人,尤其在经历这场疫情后,一起为减少人与人的接触付诸行动,并且振兴旅游业和酒店业。我们的众目标是马币5百千令吉(RM 500,000.00),其中40%会花费在为客户采购机器组件,20%作为市场行销费用,20%为人工费,及20%用作研发和运营费。
