My Story

I have spoken with THOUSANDS of creative talent

 

 

Hi, I’m Tony. I was a product designer for 4 years after graduating from the Malaysian Institute of Art. After 4 years of employment, I decided to take the leap to start my own design agency and to become my own boss.

I’ve always thought that the only career path for a designer was to start with employment before moving on to entrepreneurship.

Upon settling on a plan of action, I met up with my sister, Chloe, who is also a designer and managed to convince her to join my attempt at entrepreneurship.
 


Our small design agency had 4 employees. We quickly realised that it was not enough to meet the needs of most of our clients by just providing design services, so we immediately adjusted our servicing direction to provide the full package - design, print and shipping services.

Soon, it dawned on us that many SMEs have design needs but do not have dedicated design departments to address the demand. That resulted in the formation of “Your Creative Department” - a concept introduced to these companies to outsource their creative work to us.

Those days were filled and occupied with meeting clients. It never crossed my mind that 3 years later, I would be speaking with thousands of creative talent.

 

 

The first year of running the agency exhausted us physically and financially. The concept of “Your Creative Department” felt like nothing more than a slogan, for we were struggling to stay afloat.

In June of 2016, I interviewed a local designer who had just returned from Australia and that changed the agency’s future.

From his resumé, it was clear that he wasn’t suitable for our agency, but I knew that a friend at an advertising agency was needing his speciality urgently.

It was then I decided to do things differently - to “rent” out a designer. This meant to rent this candidate to the advertising agency.

Wages would be calculated by the day and if things didn’t work out, they could terminate the collaboration anytime.

To the company renting a designer, it was a convenient and straightforward process that had a vast reduction of risks and commitment in comparison to if they were to hire a full-time employee. To the designer being rented out, it allowed him to find work quickly. And to me, I was able to receive a handsome amount of returns for facilitating the collaboration. Most importantly, all three parties were pleased with the arrangement and that made me feel a sense of achievement.

After ironing out the details of the arrangement, the designer started work at my friend’s advertising agency for 3 months until the project ended.

It seemed that the “renting out a designer” method was promising. In August of 2016, we officially pivoted and became ‘Rtist’ - a platform for renting a creative talent.

 


My Project

Allowing enterprises and suitable creative talent to find each other effortlessly

Since I wanted to implement the talent-for-hire concept, I needed to perform certain due diligence on the creatives’ thoughts on the matter. I also had to let these creatives know that Rtist could find them work.

I believed that face-to-face communication was the best way to achieve that.

 

 

It started with a few and grew to dozens of people by just by spreading the word in the creatives’ circles about the meetups. It began with just Mandarin language meetups and expanded to English and Malay languages meetups too. The membership amount of creatives in Rtist gradually multiplied and the number of creatives who found work through Rtist also increased.



As of today, I have conducted more than 100 sessions of meetups and have had face-to-face interaction with thousands of creative talent.

I not only became familiar with all sorts of creatives’ situations but also grasped the ways to best introduce the most suitable creative to a client.

 

 

As we’ve accumulated a vast amount of creatives, a wave of companies and advertising agencies started to get in touch. They only had to provide us with details of their design needs, budget, project timeline and other details regarding their project scope, and we’d be able to recommend a creative best suited for them.

With Rtist as a third-party, these companies didn’t need to worry about not having help when dealing with unexpected situations and creatives didn’t have to worry about not being paid.

 

 

As our database increased, managerial tasks became more demanding.

We needed a better way of managing our resources.

After a year in preparation, on the 10th of May 2019, Rtist’s online platform officially went live.

 

 

This is a platform that allows creatives to have more exposure and a great place to let companies find suitable talent effortlessly.

To cater to different needs, we set up various levels of commitments, namely on a Permanent,Freelancer, Project Basis, Daily Rental, Hourly Rental and Contract Basis. We also categorised jobs into 10 groups of creative fields.

Creatives can easily fill in their details and upload their portfolios onto Rtist’s online platform. Companies only had to provide their project scope, skill requirements, budget, timeline, language, and other relevant details. With the press of a button, all of the creatives that fit the bill are clearly listed in the search results. Companies can then contact their favourite creatives directly to take it forward.
 

And of course, companies could reach out to Rtist directly. Upon understanding the project scope, our dedicated creative consultants would provide a list of recommended talent to the companies. It’s fast and straightforward to complete a personalised talent search.

When one thinks of finding creative talent, one thinks of Rtist! Because this is where you can definitely find the talent to meet your needs.

Continuous growth of the creative talent directory

At the moment, Rtist operates both online and offline, with a total of 2,600 members.

Thanks to our efforts in creating a catalogue of talent, many projects that had seemed impossible became possible.

Once, there was a company that suddenly faced a pressing deadline for a challenging project with a heavy workload because the initial agency responsible for it could not complete it due to certain emergencies that had cropped up. This was two weeks before submission. They found Rtist, and we arranged 5 creatives who had the experience needed to complete the work to see the project to the finish line.

 

 

There was another company who needed a thousand articles. Through Rtist, we delegated the project to the platform’s writers and had each of them responsible for taking care of a portion of the workload. Eventually, we successfully helped the client complete a thousand articles.

 



Since founding the platform, we have provided creative services to more than a thousand enterprises. In hindsight, the concept of “Your Creative Department” that we initially planned for did come true.

Rtist’s revenue increases every year. In 2018, Rtist successfully took on 1,260 cases, rented out creatives for 2,000 days for over 16,000 hours and paid out a grand sum of RM1,041,750 to our talents.

 

 

At the moment, we are planning to launch ‘Partnership’, to provide better services for Rtist’s members scattered all over Malaysia. At the same time, we have made our way through the doors of creative academies to promote the ‘Get Your First Job’ campaign, to allow students in creative streams to start their career in Rtist and spread their wings.

In 2018, we were the Cradle CIP300 Grand Recipient that was awarded with RM300,000 of entrepreneurship fund. Rtist was also one of the Top 5 Start-ups of the Selangor Accelerator Programme, one of the Top 10 Winners in the MyStartr Dream Factory Startup Contest 2017, and more. Our success and existence have since been widely reported in the media.

 

 

There are new members joining Rtist every day. We need more variety of talent to complete Rtist’s online and offline integration work. This round of crowdfunding is primarily for upgrading our platform’s network, team development and marketing, but most importantly, to invite like-minded people all over the country to join us in this endeavour of helping Malaysia’s creative talent shine.

我的自述

我与上千名设计师面对面交谈过

 

 

我是Tony,自马来西亚艺术学院(MIA)毕业后,我当了4年的产品设计师,然后决定自己开办设计事务所,当自己的老板。
我以为,先打工、后创业,是设计师职业生涯的唯一路径。

拿定主意后,我约了Chloe,我的姐姐,她也是一名设计师。我成功说服她,加入我的创业行列。

 

 

小小的设计事务所共有4名成员,我们很快发现,“只提供设计”无法满足大部分客户的需求,于是立刻调整方向,改为“提供从设计、到印刷、再到运输的一条龙服务”。

我们发现,许多中小型企业都有设计的需求,却没有专门的设计部门来应对,所以,我们提出了“你的设计部门”(Your Design Department)的理念,请他们把设计工作“外包”给我们。

那时候,我忙着见客户,根本没想到,3年后的我,将与超过上千名设计师面对面交谈。

 

 

事务所成立的第一年,又累又穷。“你的设计部门”好像只是一个口号,实际上,我们每天都在为了生存而苦苦挣扎。

2016年6月,我面试了一名从澳洲回国的设计师,扭转了公司的前途。

从他的履历来看,我知道他并不完全适合我的公司,但我知道有一名在广告事务所工作的朋友,急需他的技能。

我决定另辟蹊径——出租设计师,把他“租”给了那家广告事务所。

费用按天计算,如果觉得不合适,可以随时终止合作。

对租用设计师的公司来说,简单、方便,风险也被大大降低;对被出租的设计师而言,可以快速地找到工作;而我呢,促成合作后,就能拿到可观的回酬。最重要的是,我们三方都对这个安排感到满意,这让我充满了成就感。

协商完成后的第二天,那名设计师便开始到朋友的广告事务所工作,直到项目结束为止,为期3个月。

看来,“出租设计师”的方式可行。2016年8月,我们正式转型,成立了Rtist——设计师出租平台。

 


我的项目

让企业与合适的设计师轻松对接

既然我要做的是“出租设计师”,那我首先要知道的是设计师们的想法和概况;我也得让设计师知道,Rtist能帮他们找到工作。

 

面对面交流,是我觉得最好的办法。
 

 

从一开始的几个人到后来的几十个人,交流会口碑式地在设计师的圈中传开;从最初的华语交流会,到英语和马来语交流会,Rtist的会员资料库越来越大,通过Rtist接到工作的设计师也越来越多。

 

 

如今,我已经做了超过100场交流会,与上千名设计师面对面交流。

我不仅熟悉设计师的各种概况,就“如何将对的设计师介绍给对的客户”也有一定的把控力。

 

 

因汇集了大量的设计师资源,企业和广告事务所都找上了我们。只需告知设计需求、预算、时间排程等资料,我们就会为他们推荐合适的设计师人选。

有了Rtist作为第三方,企业无需担心工作出现状况时求助无门,设计师也不用担心收不到钱的问题。

 

 

随着资料库的增多,管理工作变得费劲。

我们需要一个更好的方式。

经过了1年的筹备,2019年5月10日,Rtist网络平台正式上线。

 

 

这是一个让设计师被更多人看到的平台,更是一个让企业轻松找到合适人才的好地方。

我们针对不同的需求,设立了——全职(Permanent)、兼职(Freelancer)、项目(Project Basis)、日租(Daily Rental)、时租(Hourly Rental)及短期合约(Contract Basis),并将设计工作划分成了十大领域。

设计师可以将自己的资料与作品上传到Rtist的网络平台,企业只需填妥设计需求、技能要求、预算、时间、语言等详情,一个按钮,所有符合要求的设计师立刻出现。接着就能直接与心仪的设计师联系,商讨合作详情。

当然,企业也能直接联系Rtist。我们的专员在了解项目详情后,会给企业推荐合适的人选,轻松完成人才的私人订制。

持续增长的设计师资料库

目前,Rtist在线上线下,共有超过2600名会员。

我们因聚集了大量人才,让许多不可能的任务,都变得可能。

曾有一家公司,在上交年度报告截止前两周,原来负责的事务所出了状况,无法完成。截止日期迫在眉睫,工作量巨大,非常挑战。

他们找到了Rtist。我们为他安排了5名有相关经验的设计师,顺利完成了这项任务。

 

 

还有家企业,有1000篇文章需要撰写。通过Rtist,我们把这项任务分摊给Rtist旗下的撰稿人,每人负责一些,最终协助客户顺利完成了1000篇文章的任务。

 

 

成立至今,我们已经为超过1000家公司提供设计服务;回头看,曾经规划的“你的设计部门”理念还真的实现了。

每一年,Rtist的营业额都在增长。2018年,Rtist 成功对接了1260份案子,出租设计师2000天,时长超过1万6000个小时,给设计师们发出的资金总额为RM1,041,750。

 

 

目前,我们正计划推出“合伙制”,让分散全马各地的Rtist会员,获得更好的服务。同时,我们已走入大专院校,推出“Get Your First Job”的活动,让相关科系的学生,立足Rtist,扬帆起航。

 

 


为何发起?

闪闪发光的大马设计圈

2018年,我们成功获得马来西亚摇篮基金(Cradle Fund)新摇篮计划CIP300所提供的RM300,000创业资金。Rtist也获得了雪州加速器(Selangor Accelerator Programme)五强队伍、第一届圆梦工场创业大赛十强队伍等奖项,并多次得到媒体的报导。

 

 

每一天,都有新会员加入Rtist。我们需要更充足的人员,来完善Rtist线上线下的整合工作。这次筹集的资金除了用于网络平台的升级、人员拓展及营销,更希望号召志同道合的朋友,加入我们,一起让大马的设计师发光。
